I went to the Western Digital website and downloaded the firmware updater. Would like to hear from anyone who can help. This problem started after I upgraded to the initial version of High Sierra. I swapped the USB cable on this drive, and the problem went away for a while, but now it's back. One drive ( My Book 1230 3TB) in particular drops out a lot. I bought the Manhattan because the older 10 port hub I was using was doing this same trick, so I know it is not the hub. I am using a Manhattan 28 port self-powered hub. In most cases, the drive reboots itself fairly quickly, but in one case, I had to pull the power adapter plug from the rear of the drive, wait a coupla minutes and replug, and the drive came back up. External WD USB drives randomly disconnect, and I am given the alert re: improper disconnect. The Monthly CCC backup stays in a different location and only gets connected maybe once a month The Weekly CCC backup stays in the FireSafe and only gets connected once a week The Daily CCC backup stays connected 24-7 Personally I use TimeMachine and CCC for Daily, Weekly and Monthly backups. Another option is to only connect up the #3 CCC and #5 SD drives one at a time while your actually doing a backup.

I would try a different self-powered Hub. I would start by removing one of the 3, 4, or 5 drives and then run for a period of time until I could isolate which drive is causing the problem. or that all 3 drives togeather are overloading the Mac's port. one of the (3, 4 or 5) drives has a bad cable or enclosure.Ģ. Nice cases, easy to fit drives into and 2amp PSUs as opposed to 1.2amp on WD (should last longer as will be working well below the maximum amperage). I got two of the Orico Aluminium hard drive cases.
